Furosemide treats congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), high blood pressure, high calcium and potassium levels, liver disease, and some kidney diseases. It is a potent diuretic drug used in animals who suffer from fluid retention. Most often, it is used in dogs and cats to reduce fluid accumulation and prevent further edema. It prevents the absorption of chloride, sodium, potassium, and water, leading to increased urine production. Increased urine production helps the kidneys remove excess fluid from the lungs and body cavities.
